Ensto Protrol has recently had the opportunity to participate in a primary earth fault test organized by KSS Energia and Ensto in Finland. An IPC4022 and LOFA sensors for over head lines were used in this field test.
The fault detector registered 0.6 A earth fault currents with correct direction to the fault. This current corresponded to 16 kohm fault resistance.
Our film crew has produced a short description of how the local LED indicators are activated after the detection of an overcurrent or earth fault in an open loop.
The Automation function is an option for the standard product. In short it means that it autonomously lets the IPC402x devices isolate the faulty cable segment and subsequently close the open point. The local LED indicators are used in an alternative way when the Automation option is in use.
Fault isolation and power restoration
We have now made a short movie to visualize fault isolation and power restoration.
In this movie, we use our upgraded simulation panel to simulate a line fault. The two IPC devices on both sides of the fault open their circuit breakers and command a closing of the open point in a split second for the shortest possible disturbance of affected customers.
Casted Split Core Current Transformer
Another customer case has resulted in a powerful split core current transformer of casted type for larger cable diameters. The secondary current cable is shielded to minimize electromagnetic disturbances.
Assembly on the primary cable is done without any tools.
IPC4020 and IPC4020exp has already 16 binary inputs and 8 binary outputs - but in some cases more than that are needed. PDCIO is a compact and scalable I/O extension for your IPC when there are plenty of I/O in the secondary substation.
PDCIO is configured using the web settings of the IPC, both locally in the secondary substation and at the remote control location.
The new PxL is a communication interface for LoRaWAN 868 MHz. It has a serial interface to connect to the IPC402x series of fault detectors.

Protrol will operate under the name Ensto Protrol AB, and Torbjörn Karlsson continues as Managing Director.
Protrol Engineering AB is not affected by the transaction.

The method is also useful in isolated networks, a fact that was thoroughly discussed in a seminar arranged by State Grid in September. Protrol is grateful to the hosts and all the interested listeners that participated during the seminar.
Automatic Fault Isolation and Power Restoration in Härryda Grid
Protrol has together with Härryda Energi in Sweden performed primary faults in Härrydas "Self-sectionalizing grid", an open loop with eight secondary substations equipped with circuit breakers and distributed fault isolation.
IPC, the detectors with remote terminal function, identified the faulty cable segmen fast and distinctly, allowing the circuit breakers in the proper secondary substations to isolate the fault, before the feeding primary substation operated. Finally the open loop was closed, keeping power to the end users.
